An admin's live readout of server performance, with samples written to the RPT
In development · ALiVE 3
ALiVE 3 is in active development. This briefing describes work in progress, and the behaviour it covers is subject to change as testing continues. Check the changelog at the foot of the page for what has moved recently.
Overview
Performance Reporting lets an admin watch how the server is coping. From the ALiVE menu, Perf > Start Perf samples the server every 60 seconds and writes each sample to the server RPT as one line starting ALiVE PERF. Show Perf puts a live readout on screen. While it is open the server takes a fresh sample every 10 seconds just for the readout, even if Start Perf was never used, and those extra samples are not written to the RPT. Stop Perf ends the RPT sampling. It needs no module of its own and no War Room connection.
Each sample records server FPS and minimum FPS, players, AI local to the server and AI elsewhere (headless clients, players' machines), groups, vehicles, dead bodies, active and inactive ALiVE profiles, running scripts and FSMs. The Perf entry only shows to a logged-in or voted admin (in single player, to the player), and the server refuses a start or stop from anyone else. The old recorder that sent the same kind of data to War Room is still off and kept for the War Room rebuild.
Capabilities
Writes each sample to the server RPT as one line starting ALiVE PERF, so a slowdown can be matched to what was running at the time. Monitoring stops when an admin uses Stop Perf or the mission ends.
Shows the server's performance in a hint that updates every 10 seconds while it is open, whether or not Start Perf is running, and says so if the first sample is still on its way. Those readout samples are not written to the RPT. Use it again (Hide Perf) to close it.
Performance Monitoring at Start on the ALiVE Required module starts sampling as the mission begins, with no admin needed. It is off by default.
The menu entry is only shown to an admin, and a start or stop request from a machine without admin rights is refused and logged.
Recent work
Status
Start Perf, Show Perf and Stop Perf for admins, samples in the RPT, and Performance Monitoring at Start on the Required module. Issue #1031.
The old web-service recorder is kept, still off, for when War Room is rebuilt.
Testing
As an admin, open the ALiVE menu and go to Perf. Use Start Perf, then Show Perf: within about 10 seconds the readout fills with numbers that update every 10 seconds, and the server RPT gains a line starting ALiVE PERF every 60 seconds (the readout's own samples are not logged). Show Perf also works without Start Perf. Use Stop Perf and check Start Perf is offered again. As a non-admin, check there is no Perf entry. Also try Performance Monitoring at Start set to Yes on the Required module: samples should begin without anyone using the menu.
